The Brazilian White Center – UNASP is a team of teachers and students at the Brazilian Ellen G. White Research Center – UNASP at the Brazilian Adventist University, Campus Engenheiro, Coelho, SP. João Bork, administrator, teacher, and librarian, was born October 28, 1911, in the city of Oslowo, currently in Poland.1 He was the son of Max Bork, baptized at Oslowo in 1904, in the early days of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Germany, and Helena Bork. In 1922 his family emigrated to Brazil where they engaged in agriculture and cattle raising. João attended high school in Brazil and studied theology and education at Brazil College, graduating in 1935.2 On February 4, 1936, he married Rosa Butzloff3 (1909-1989),4 and from this union were born Ruth and Ivone.5

In 1936 João accepted an invitation to teach at the Adventist elementary school in the city of Bom Retiro, in the state of Santa Catarina.6 Despite facing prejudice, in about a year the school showed significant improvement in the quality of teaching and became a model to the Adventist schools in the state.7 In 1938 he was transferred to the Adventist school in the city of Benedito Novo, where he served as teacher of religion for the elementary school and as assistant treasurer for one year. Beginning in 1939, he was appointed teacher of religion and sub-treasurer of Brazil College.8 He also served as youth director of the college church.9 The following year he became teacher and treasurer of the recently established Petrópolis Adventist Academy, in the city of Petrópolis, state of Rio de Janeiro. He and his wife were the first teachers of this school,10 participating in the process of its establishment.11 He also served as business manager (1946-1947),12 interim director (1947),13 and director (1949)14 until he accepted the invitation to lead the Educandário Nordestino Adventista (Northeast Brazil College) in 1950 in the city of Belém de Maria, state of Pernambuco.15 Under his management this institution developed both structurally and educationally.16 He was a self-taught teacher of English, French, mathematics, physics, and all the classes of the theology course.17 He was ordained to the ministry in 195318 and worked at this college until 1958.19

In 1959 he began work on a master’s degree in education at Andrews University.20 Before completing his studies, in the middle of 1960, he accepted an invitation to lead the Adventist Taquara Academy (Cruzeiro do Sul Adventist Academy) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. His management helped the institution to overcome some financial challenges.21 Finally, he went to Brazil College where he served as administrative director (1966),22 vice president for commercial affairs (1967-1971), and treasurer (1971)23 until his retirement in 1972.24

During his retirement he continued to work at Brazil College as chief librarian, helping to make the library one of the ten largest in number of books in Adventist schools outside the United States. João died on April 3, 1988,25 at Hospital Beneficência Portuguesa, in São Paulo.26 His efforts were of great help to the development of Adventist education in Brazil.
