Fayard, Marcelo I. (1894–1966)

Marcelo I. Fayard was a canvasser, educator, pastor, editor, and writer in Spain, Argentina, and the United States.¹

Fayard was born in Saint Fortunat, Drôme, France, on April 19, 1894. Some of his siblings went to Argentina. Guillermo, Rosa Teresa, Samuel Luis, Aimé, and Gastón.²

In 1918 he married Cecilia Prodolliet, who gave him two children: Irene Alicia and Rolando M. In 1923 he became widowed, and two years later he married again, to Isabel Paulo, and they had two sons: Ariel Olinto and Alfredo Ariel.

Fayard studied in Gland, Switzerland, and joined the canvassing work in Spain in 1912. In 1914 he emigrated to Argentina.³ He was a teacher in the school that functioned in the house of the Peverini family, in the north of Santa Fe province.⁴ Soon he started to work at the Buenos Aires Publishing House, as writer of the reviews El Atalaya [The Watchtower] and La Revista Adventista [Adventist Review], and as chief editor. He studied in the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, in Washington, D.C.⁵ He was also a speaker at evangelistic meetings in the city of Buenos Aires.⁶ His pastoral ordination was on December 27, 1947.

In 1948 he was called to the Pacific Press Publishing Association, in California, United States, where he worked for 17 years. He was the author of 17 books; some of them had a circulation of 250,000 copies. He translated 13 of Ellen G. White’s⁷ books from English to Spanish.

Marcelo I. Fayard died on March 24, 1966, in Mountain View, California, United States. Fayard made an important contribution in the field of Adventist publications in Latin America.
