Marcelo Alberto Hammerly was a physician, teacher, writer, and director of River Plate Sanitarium in Libertador San Martín, Entre Ríos, Argentina.

Origins and Studies (1908-1936)

Hammerly was born on March 30, 1908, in La Ligniere, Gland, Vaud, Switzerland. His parents, Geraldo Armando Hämmerly (1882-1964) and Martha Josephine Dupuy, were married in Gland, Switzerland on April 24, 1906. They graduated as nurses from the Adventist sanitarium in Gland, Switzerland where their children Daniel and Marcel were born. In 1908, Armando and Martha, went with their children to Argentina where they worked as nurses in the River Plate Sanitarium.1 The following year they moved to Montevideo, Uruguay, as self-supporting missionaries.2 There Rosita was born. Marcelo’s siblings were: (1) Daniel Hämmerly Dupuy, born on February 3, 1907, at Léman Sanitarium, in Gland, canton of Vaud, Switzerland and married Angélica Peverini. He served as pastor, teacher, lecturer, and writer. (2) Rosa Luisa Hämmerly Dupuy (1909-1998), born on May 25, 1909, in Montevideo, Uruguay, married Arturo Beskow and died on April 23, 1998, in Libertador San Martín, Entre Ríos, Argentina.3

In 1935 he completed his studies at the Faculty of Medicine, located in the city of Montevideo, capital of the Uruguay Republic. He was a doctor and a surgeon, with a long career and vast experience in Argentina. From February to September 1936 he held a medical residence at Washington Sanitarium and Hospital, United States.

Family and Career in the River Plate Sanitarium (1936-1991)

He began his career on October 1, 1936 as a physician at the River Plate Sanitarium, Entre Ríos, Argentina, when Dr. Carlos Edgar Westphal (1890-1965) was director.4

He married Inés Carlota Ernst Köhli on January 6, 1937 and from this union five children were born: Hernán Daniel, Arturo Rolando, Inés Alicia, Graciela Isabel, and Silvia Aurora.5 Inés Carlota Ernst was born on July 30, 1910 in Encarnación, Paraguay, from the marriage of Julio Ernst and María Köhli. She died on December 15, 2005, in Libertador San Martín, Entre Ríos.

From 1937 to 1953 Hämmerly was deputy director of the River Plate Sanitarium. From 1954 he served as director until the end of 1967.6 Later he continued as a physician until July 1973, when he retired.7 Doctor Pedro D. Tabuenca succeeded him as director of River Plate Sanitarium. He graduated from the University of Buenos Aires and went to River Plate Sanitarium in 1954.8

Marcelo A. Hämmerly died on September 8, 1991, at the River Plate Sanitarium.9 He served the Church as a missionary for 37 fruitful years. He was a professor at the nursing school of the same institution, an outstanding writer, and an outstanding doctor.10 He also excelled as a builder and administrator, and inspired vocations in the area of health.
