Henrique Carlos Kaercher was a typographer and founder of the Art Department of the Brazil Publishing House.

Henrique Carlos Kaercher was born June 25, 1915, in the city of Candelaria, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.1 He was the firstborn of Christiano Valentim Kaercher's six children (1880-?) and Carlota Schubert Kaercher (1890-1971).2 From this union were born also Irma Cristina Boger (1920-1981), Bruno Cristian Kaercher (1917-1996), Dorothea Shäffer (1922-2010), Herta Neuman, and Olga Costa.3

Kaercher started working at 12 years old. His father wanted him to become a cabinetmaker, but there was no vacancy for him to learn the profession. He got a job distributing newspapers, but was soon invited to work directly at the company, starting as an apprentice. Although the work was different from Henrique's initial intention, he soon became enthusiastic about the profession.4

Over six years Kaercher went from apprentice to the head of typography and printing. At the age of 18, while serving in the military, Kaercher canvassed for a year. But as he was aiming to study, he returned to work at the same print store. He canvassed again during his vacation, and began attending Cruzeiro do Sul Academy, in Taquara. In high school he worked to help pay his tuition. But as his finances got tighter, in the second year of his studies, he went to work in Mr. Spindler’s printing shop, in Taquara. Seeing that the young man was dedicated and a professional, the owner offered Kaercher the opportunity to join the company as a partner.5

Kaercher joined the denominational service on November 15, 1938, when he received the invitation of the Brazil Publishing House’s manager, Pastor Emílio Doehnert, to work in Santo Andre. He counseled with his father, who advised him to accept it because it was a calling.6 His first assignment at the Brazil Publishing House was to replace Gröschel, in manual composition.7

On December 13, 1939, Kaercher married Herta Hort Kaercher, in Jaraguá do Sul, Santa Catarina state.8 She served as vice-director of the program “Christmas of the Poor,” promoted by the Adventist Solidarity Action of the church in Santo Andre, in 1959.9 From the union of Henry and Herta were born two children. The firstborn, Vanilda Kaercher, died at the age of five in 1957.10 The second was Waldir Kaercher,11

Kaercher also collaborated in the development of the first Great Camp of the Brazil Publishing House.12 His contribution was important in promoting healthy cooking courses in evangelistic campaigns.13

From 1938 to 1977, Kaercher developed a remarkable ministry at the Brazil Publishing House. He stayed for ten years in the manual composition sector.14 He became supervisor of this section and manual composition.15 Later, he accepted an invitation to be assistant manager in the factory. Kaercher felt the need for a specialized section on diagramming and illustration of books and magazines, in the institution, so he went to a tight corner of the old linotype and he started this work.16

In 1966, Henrique Kaercher was sent as delegate to the General Conference session in the United States.17 In the U.S. he visited the publishing houses of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the United States, investigating their Art Departments.18

After returning to Brazil, he was enthusiastic about developing the Art Department he had created in 1965. Kaercher still fought for the development of the offset system at the Brazil Publishing House. He searched to acquire an offset printing press.19

Kaercher remained as a boss of the Art Department until 1977, when he retired.20 He remained active in the denomination, devoting himself to missionary work in Acre,.21 as well as agricultural activities.22 After living in Acre, he moved with his wife to Itapema, Santa Catarina.23 In all, Kaercher devoted 40 years of his life to working for the Church. He died in March 2009, in the city of Jaraguá do Sul, state of Santa Catarina.24

Henrique Kaercher made a significant contribution to the Adventist Church in Brazil at the Brazil Publishing House, where he worked in several departments and pioneered the Art Department.25 For such contributions, he may be considered as an important pioneer in Adventist publishing in Brazil.26
