Oswaldo Rodrigues de Azevedo, an Adventist pastor, teacher, and administrator, was born February 8, 1913, in Rolante, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He was the son of Arthur Rodrigues de Azevedo and Cândida Mendes dos Reis, both Adventists. He had 14 siblings, including Emílio Rodrigues de Azevedo, Alcindo Rodrigues de Azevedo, Alzira Azevedo, Roberto Rodrigues de Azevedo, Cândida de Azevedo Klein, Alícia Azevedo Gouvea, Lídia Azevedo Preüss, José Rodrigues de Azevedo, and Onélia Azevedo. Those whose names are not mentioned, died young.1

Oswaldo Rodrigues married Yolanda Waldvogel Maluf on December 28, 1937. Yolanda, was born in 1914 and died in 2004 in the city of Hortolândia, Sao Paulo.2 They had three children: Elda Azevedo Bonfim, who died in 1979, Leni Azevedo Oliveira, and Haroldo Azevedo.3

Yolanda worked as a language teacher at Cruzeiro do Sul Adventist Academy (IACS), in the city of Taquara, Rio Grande do Sul,4 and in Campineiro Adventist Gymnasium (now referred to as UNASP-HT). There she taught French, Portuguese, and home economics. At the Brazil College (now referred to as UNASP-SP) she taught French.5

Orlando finished primary school in 1920 at Roberto Mendes de Oliveira Adventist Primary School, now referred to as Pastor Ivo Souza Adventist School, in the city of Rolante, Rio Grande do Sul. In 1931 he moved to the city of Santo Amaro, Sao Paulo, in order to continue his studies at Brazil College, where he finished high school. He graduated from Brazil College with a degree in theology in 1936.6

In 1939 he began to work to the Adventist Church as a minister for the Sao Paulo Conference, which at the time covered the entire state of Sao Paulo and part of the state of Minas Gerais. He remained there until 1942. On February 8, 1942, he was ordained to the pastoral ministry, and the following year he taught Bible and music subjects at Adventist Taquara Academy, now referred to as Cruzeiro do Sul Adventist Academy (IACS), in Taquara, Rio Grande do Sul. In 1944 he served in the Personal Ministries and Sabbath School departments of the Rio Grande do Sul Conference. He was a teacher and pastor of the Adventist Taquara Academy until 1947. The following year he returned to the Sao Paulo Conference where he served as a district pastor until 1950.7

From 1951 until the beginning of 1958, he was director of the Campineiro Adventist Gymnasium (GAC) in the city of Hortolandia, Sao Paulo. At the time the gymnasium was in its early years and had few workers, so Oswaldo was director, pastor, farm administrator, Bible and history teacher, and church choir conductor. From 1958 to 1963, he worked as president of the São Paulo Conference, then for 12 years he was president of the South Brazil Union Conference. In his last two years of work, from 1976 to 1977, he served as field secretary for the South American Division.8

Oswaldo Rodrigues de Azevedo made a significant contribution to the Seventh-day Adventist Church as a pastor and as a Bible and music teacher at the current IACS. He also worked in the departments of Personal Ministries and Sabbath School of the Rio Grande do Sul Conference and was a district pastor for the Sao Paulo Conference. Oswaldo retired in Sao Paulo and moved to the city of Sao Carlos, Sao Paulo. He died of pneumonia on March 28, 1990, at the age of 77, at the Sao Paulo Adventist Hospital,9 and he was buried in the city of Sumaré, Sao Paulo.10
