The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Togo is well known in this country for its eye hospital of Glei, commonly known in French as Centre Hospitalier Adventiste d’Ophtalmologie of Glei with the acronym CHAO Glei. The hospital building was inaugurated on April 4, 1984, and offered general medicine services. The ophthalmology unit began operating in 1992 with the arrival of a missionary couple, Edgard and Cristina d’Oliveira, from Brazil.
