José Miranda Rocha was a pastor and teacher in Brazil.

José Miranda Rocha was born on May 17, 1945, in Santa Izabel do Pará, state of Pará, Brazil. Son of Florêncio Pereira and Maria Miranda Rocha,1 he had eight siblings: Maria de Nazaré, Maria de Belém, Carlos Miranda Rocha, Guilherme Miranda Rocha, Ivone Rocha Canuto, Lucia Rocha Faleiro, Luis Miranda Rocha and Francisco Miranda Rocha. His mother was a religious person and appreciated hearing the Voice of Prophecy radio program, presented by Pastor Roberto Rabello. On Saturdays, she had her children seated to listen to the program, what much influenced José to later make his decision for baptism.2

José completed middle school in 1961 at Ginásio Visconde de Souza Franco, in the city of Belém, capital of Pará.3 After receiving Bible instruction from Pastor Aldo Carvalho, he was baptized by him on November 17, 1962, in the São Brás Adventist Church, in Belém.4 José was engaged in denominational work since his conversion, and soon after his baptism he began canvassing, influenced by Pastor Walter Streithorst and Azarias Kettle.5 In 1965 he completed high school at Colégio Estadual Paes de Carvalho, in Belém.6 After this he worked as a Bible instructor in Belém and then as an assistant nurse at the Belém Adventist Hospital.7

Feeling that he was called to be a pastor, he entered the Theology program at Northeast Brazil Academy (ENA). There he met Haydee Ferreira de Carvalho, who was a girls dean, Bible and music teacher.8 They were married on January 30, 1968,9 and together they had two sons: Hamilton and Emerson Rocha. During her life, Haydee was committed to the church work and always supported her husband.10

José graduated from Theology in 1968 and began his ministry in 1969 as an evangelist in Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro states. He served as a licensed minister at Minas Mission from 1970 to his ordination on September 22, 1973.11 Afterwards, he was a district pastor in the state of Minas Gerais until being appointed as director of the Ministerial department of the Minas Mission in 1976.12

In 1979, he accepted a call to lead the Communication department of the East Brazil Union Mission.13 The following year he returned to Minas Mission to be the Field Secretary,14 a position he occupied until 1982. Afterwards he was transferred to Paraná Conference,15 where he was a district pastor for the following eight years and pastored the Central Church of Curitiba.16 In 1984, he concluded his Masters´ degree at (UNASP-EC) entitled A study on the strategy proposed in the writings of Ellen White for the evangelization of large cities.17

In 1991 he completed his DMin degree at Andrews University, United States, defending the thesis: A Manual for SDA Ministers of South Brazil to Train the Laity in Understanding How to Evangelize Roman Catholic Basic Ecclesial Communities.18 On returning to Brazil, he was called to teach at the Theology Seminary at (UNASP-EC), where he served for the next 16 years.19 In addition to the classes taught, in 1995 he coordinated a public evangelism group which resulted in the opening of a church in Jardim Esperança III, the third Adventist church of the city of Conchal.20 He was also the academic coordinator of the Theology course until 2008, getting retired in 2009.21

Only two years later José Miranda died in the early hours of May 4, 2011, at the age of 65, after fighting against a brain cancer for about a year. The memorial service took place at the church of UNASP-EC, and he was buried in the Municipal Cemetery of Arthur Nogueira.22 In his honor, on March 23, 2018 the town hall of Engenheiro Coelho opened the Nursery School CEI Pr. José Miranda Rocha, in the Cidade Universitária district.23 José Miranda Rocha served the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Brazil for 40 years and much contributed to the advancement of the Adventist message for his administrative, pastoral and teaching skills.
