Manuel Margarido, pastor and canvasser, was born on November 10, 1887, in Portugal. He married Estefânia Margarido, with whom he had two children: Alberto Armando Margarido and Alcina Margarido (Linhares). The family emigrated to Brazil in 1911, where they received the Adventist message and were baptized. After that, Manuel decided to dedicate himself to preaching the Gospel through canvassing. In 1915, he canvassed for the first time in São Paulo, where he demonstrated the ability to introduce the message using excellent Portuguese. The following year, he accepted the call to be the canvassing director in the Rio Grande do Sul state.1

From 1916 to 1917, Manuel canvassed in several cities in the state of São Paulo: Piracaia, Bragança, Pinhal, Taubate, Indaiatuba, Itu, São Manuel, Jaboticabal, and in the city of São Paulo.2 In the first semester of 1918, he led the canvassing department of the Rio-Espirito Santo Mission,3 and then he worked in the corresponding department in the Mineira Mission.4

In January 1919, he accepted the call to be a canvassing director of the São Paulo Conference,5 where he remained until 1925.6 In this field, he held several training conferences for young canvassers at the Brazil College (today UNASP-SP).7 The canvassers' work contributed to the expansion of the Adventism in many cities, among them Espírito Santo do Pinhal, where the first church was founded in 1923.8

From 1926 to 1927, he served as the canvassing director at the East Brazil Union Mission.9 He accepted the call to lead that same department at the South Brazil Union Conference, where he stayed until 1932.10 That year, he was ordained to the ministry and the ceremony was held at the São Paulo Central Church, where he received his first credential as pastor.11 In 1933, he guided the departments of Education, Youth, and Canvassing in the São Paulo Conference. He remained in the Canvassing department until 1935, when he accepted the invitation to work in the pastoral ministry.12 From 1936 to 1941, he served successively as pastor in the districts of Ribeirao Preto, Taubaté, Campinas, and São Paulo,13 where in 1940, he also led the Sabbath School and Personal Ministry departments.14

In 1942, he accepted the call to be president of the Goiano-Mineira Mission, where he also guided the Youth, Personal Ministry, and Education departments. He served there until he retired in 1946 due to health problems.15 Manuel Margarido passed away on July 25, 1969, leaving a legacy of faith and service to the SDA Church. Through his work in the canvassing area, many people accepted the Adventist message and several churches were established.16
