José Bellesi Filho, pastor and administrator, was born February 12, 1921, in the city of Fernando Prestes, state of São Paulo, Brazil.1 He was son of José Bellesi2 (1896-1998)3 and Narcisa Ruzzon Bellesi (1898-1983), both born in the city of Pirassununga, in the same state,4 and he had eight siblings.5 José Filho started his studies in a school in the city of Ibitinga, state of São Paulo, near the farm where he lived with his family.6 His father was baptized in 1938 and, as a result, suffered opposition from his family. In order to bring his family to Christ, he decided to send José to the Colégio Adventista Butiá in the city of Curitiba state of Paraná.7 José was baptized there in 1939 by Pastor Waldemar Ehlers, director of the school.8

After graduating from high school, Bellesi went to Brazil College where he studied accounting and theology.9 He married Nair Böel on May 23, 1946.10 From this union, Newton, Odilon, and Berenice Bellesi (de Cesaro) were born.11 After graduating with a degree in theology at the end of 1951,12 he began to work as a licensed minister in the Paraná-Santa Catarina Conference.13 He was also director of the Publishing Department (1953)14 and pastor in the Campo Mourão district in the state of Paraná (1954-1958).15 He was ordained to the pastoral ministry in 1957.16

From 1959 to 1960 he worked as the dean of the Ginásio Adventista Paranaense (now Parana Adventist College).17 In 1960 he pastored a church in the city of Poços de Caldas in the Rio-Minas Gerais Conference.18 In 1961, along with the evangelistic workers João Barcelos and Zoé Garcia, he held a series of public evangelistic meetings in the city of Andradas, which resulted in the establishment of the first local Seventh-day Adventist church on March 31, 1962.19 In the middle of 1964 he was appointed head of the departments of Sabbath School, Missionary Work, and Radio-TV.20 He worked in this field until 1967.21 From 1968 to 1970 he worked in the same departments at the East Brazil Union Conference.22 Later he worked as the president of Bahia-Sergipe Mission (1971-1973),23 of East Conference (1974-1975) where he also headed the Youth Department),24 and of Rio-Minas Gerais Conference (1976-1977).25

After leaving the presidency of Rio-Minas Gerais Conference at the beginning of 1978, he worked for some time as director of the Patrimonial Expansion and Spirit of Prophecy Departments of East Brazil Union Conference.26 In the middle of the same year he accepted an invitation to be the administrative director of the Voice of Prophecy (VOP) program in the city of Rio de Janeiro.27 When he took this position he provided important assistance in the financial recovery of the institution. In 1979 he also reactivated the quartet (“Arautos do Rei” – King’s Heralds) that had been inactive for the previous four years. He worked to expand the VOP Radio broadcasting area through affiliated radio stations and the insertion of the VOP programs in the television channels.28 He remained at the head of the VOP until he retired in 1987. José Bellesi Filho died in June 2009, in the city of Curitiba, Paraná,29 where he was also buried.30
