Antônio Álvares Filho, canvasser, was born in 1936 in the city of Joanópolis, state of São Paulo, Brazil. Son of Antônio and Alzira Veroneze Álvares, he had Paulo, Laura and Marcos Álvares as siblings. He became acquainted with the Adventist message through his father, who learned while studying the Bible that the seventh day should be observed as the day of rest. He and his wife were baptized into the Adventist Church at the end of a series of meetings held by Pastor Enéias Simon in the city of Joanópolis. Around 1955 Antônio and his siblings were baptized in the same city.1

Antônio Álvares’ formal education was limited to elementary school. Although he had little education, he was active in serving his church. A short time after his baptism he became a literature evangelist, an activity that he pursued for the rest of his life.

Antônio was known for his dedication to evangelism. He worked mainly in the region of the city of Bragança Paulista, in the state of São Paulo, and assisted in bringing many people to Christ.2 In his work of preaching the gospel, he had as a faithful companion Elza Aparecida Oliveira. They married on September 15, 1958, in Bragança Paulista, and from this union were born three children: Eliézer, Eunice, and Gerson.3 For a long time the couple belonged to the Bragança Paulista Adventist Church where they were actively involved. Elza contributed as pianist, organist, and director of children’s ministries,4 and Antônio was an elder. In addition, he enjoyed giving Bible studies to people interested in knowing more about the Word of God.5 Antônio promoted Adventist education in the city, and he participated in the foundation and development of the local Adventist school.6 Antônio Álvares Filho died in 2014, at the age of 78, in a car accident when traveling from Santa Catarina back to the state of São Paulo. He was buried at the Bragança Paulista cemetery.7
