Location
Kamunyonge Seventh-day Adventist Dispensary, which is owned and operated by the Mara Conference, is located at Nyamatare Street along Majita Road in Musoma Municipality, Mara Region, Tanzania. The municipality is located approximately 225 kilometers northeast of Mwanza, the nearest city, by road and lies approximately 480 kilometers, also by road, northwest of Arusha, the location of the headquarters of the East African Community. Musoma Municipal Council is one of the quickly growing towns in Tanzania experiencing significant population growth by both natural increase and migration. As a result, there are a variety of ethnic groups living in the municipality. The major ethnic groups are Kwaya, Jita, Kurya, Kara, Zanaki, and Luo.1
Background
The Adventist message is holistic. The Gospel of Jesus Christ and His soon return includes not only spiritual redemption, but also physical and mental restoration of humankind through a healthy lifestyle. The work of healthcare and healing is a central belief of the Adventist Church. As early as 1863, Ellen White, co-founder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, counseled the fledgling church on the importance of healthful living. The outstanding feature of her initial message was the relationship between physical welfare and spiritual health, or holiness.2 The Mara Conference adopted the mission of the Adventist Church and established healthcare facilities within the conference territory, one of which is Kamunyonge Seventh-day Adventist Dispensary, in order to fulfill the mission of the church.3
Origins and Development
The origin of Kamunyonge Seventh-day Adventist Dispensary dates back to mid-year 1970.4 It is among twenty-seven health facilities in Musoma Municipalitity.5 It operates as a faith-based organization that has been registered by the ministry of Health of the Republic of Tanzania with Reg., no 205003.6 The dispensary currently operates twenty-four hours a day, and offers the following services: outpatient, obstetrics, diagnostic, care and treatment for HIV patients, tuberculosis clinic, reproductive, and pediatrics. The dispensary is also involved in outreach services and periodically offers a specialized ophthalmology clinic.7 Its service area includes the wards of Kigera, Kamunyonge, Nyamatare, Mwisenge, and Buhare, who depend on the services of this facility in addition to others from outside of the service area.
Impact on the Mission of the Church
The dispensary operates on the Adventist system of health whereby the patients are not only treated for medical ailments, but are also educated about physical and spiritual health through the study of the Bible during morning devotions and prayer. The staff offers Christian service to the community. Every morning, they conduct a short devotion with their patients.8 Many people like the service and some have joined the Adventist Church simply because they received physical and spiritual care. Apart from engagement in patient care, the facility leadership ensures the fulfillment of the mission of the Adventist Church. Both staff and patients, living as loving witnesses, unite in reaching out to others to make them disciples of Jesus Christ. In 2017, three non-Adventist staff members and two patients committed their lives to Christ and were baptized.9
Future Outlook
The Kamunyonge Seventh-day Adventist Dispensary plans to upgrade its status to small hospital in Musoma Municipality. It plans to add specialized medical services like: dentistry, and surgery in order to attract more clients and increase contact with the local community.10 The vision is to provide the best care to patients through integrated clinical practice, where people will get proper lifestyle orientation.
