The Njombe Seventh-day Adventist Dispensary is a Seventh-day Adventist Church medical institution owned by the Southern Highlands Conference, in the Southern Tanzania Union Mission. It is strategically located in Njombe Town District in the Njombe region, along the Makambako-Songea tarmac road and is easily seen from the main road.1

Founding of the Dispensary

In 1992, the South-west Tanzania Field president bought a house previously owned by an Indian businessman for the purpose of accommodating Adventist Church workers in the Njombe District. However, due to the lack of health facilities in the district, the president initiated the idea of establishing a dispensary to treat diseases and the procedures were begun, which started with the changing of the uses of this house from a residence to a dispensary in March 1992; before the year ended, the services offered by the dispensary began. In fact, on the very first day of operation, it treated 16 patients.2

Mission Outlook

The mission of Njombe Dispensary is based in Ellen G. White’s counsel:

Medical missionary work is the right hand of the gospel. It is necessary to the advancement of the cause of God. As through it men and women are led to see the importance of right habits of living, the saving power of the truth will be made known. Every city is to be entered by workers trained to do medical missionary work. As the right hand of the third angel’s message, God’s methods of treating disease will open doors for the entrance of present truth. Health literature must be circulated in many lands. Our physicians in Europe and other countries should awake to the necessity of having health works prepared by men who are on the ground and who can meet the people where they are with the most essential instruction.3

Surely, many have come to know and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior of their lives through the Njombe Dispensary.4

Impact

The dispensary is well known in the town for its effective treatment of intestinal worms, malaria, respiratory infections, and other tropical diseases. Since its establishment, it has retained the name “Njombe,” reflecting the identity of the locality in which it operates. However, the use of indigenous terminology such as Sabato (meaning “Sabbath”) distinguishes it from nearby Catholic and government dispensaries. The facility typically serves between 75 and 100 outpatients per day, with a significant increase in patient numbers observed in the 2020s. Since its founding, the dispensary has been administered successively by the South-West Tanzania Field (1992–2005), the Southern Highlands Conference (2006–2015), and, from 2015 to the present, the Njombe Seventh-day Adventist Church.5
