Osmundo Graciliano dos Santos Júnior, pastor, administrator, and evangelist, was born on January 10, 1938, in the city of São Paulo, Brazil.1 The only son of Osmundo Graciliano dos Santos and Carmem Nunes dos Santos,2 he was raised in a modest but laborious home. His father was an illustrator at the São Paulo Health Department, and his mother had a beauty salon in Vila Mariana district, São Paulo. After becoming an Adventist, she quit the job to become a canvasser.3

From a devoted Catholic family, Osmundo was born through a difficult birth. His father promised God that, if his son would come to be healthy, he would dedicate him to be a priest. In the future, this promise would be fulfilled in an unexpected way. When Osmundo was about fifteen years old, pastor Walter Schubert, South American Division evangelist, held a series of meetings in the region he lived. The family came to learn about it through a flyer that was in front of their house, on the ground, all crumpled and wet because of the rain. As a result, Osmundo and his father were baptized in December 1953, by pastor Josino Campos, at São Paulo Central Church.4

In 1955, Osmundo entered the Theology program at Brazil College (now UNASP-SP), graduating in 1961. In February of the same year, he married Diamir dos Reis, whom he had met as a student. They had three children: Milton, Emilce and Malton. Diamir worked for the Adventist Church in the health care, Secretariat, Pathfinders, Children’s and Music ministries for 31 years. Alongside her husband, she was a secretary in many conferences and in the South American Division.5

Osmundo began his ministry in December 1961, serving as an assistant pastor in the districts of Penha and Vila Mariana, in São Paulo city. Afterwards, he worked in the church of Dracena, countryside of the state of São Paulo.6 In 1964 he accepted a call to be a missionary in Peru, where he served the Central and East Peru Missions for seven years, in the following places: Huncayo, in the Andes Mountain Range; Chimbote, in the Pacific coast; and Inquitos, in the Amazon rainforest.7 He returned to Brazil in 1971, and was appointed as pastor of the Central Church of Belém, state of Pará.8

Following this, he was leader of the Personal Ministry and Sabbath School departments of the Lower Amazonas Mission, from 1972 to 1973.9 From 1974 to 1976, he led the Personal Ministry, Sabbath School and Stewardship departments of the North Brazil Union Conference.10 By the middle of 1976, he returned to São Paulo Conference, where he served as director of the Christian Stewardship and Spirit of Prophecy departments.11 In the following year, he led the same ministries in the South Brazil Union Conference,12 where he was directly engaged in evangelistic programs and events, and contributed with the conversion of dozens of Adventist Church sympathizers.13

In 1978 he was appointed as the first secretary of the East São Paulo Conference, recently established.14 Not long after this, Pastor Floriano Xavier was called to the South Brazil Union Conference, and Osmundo was elected president of the East São Paulo Conference in 1979.15 During his term, he was directly engaged in the founding of São Roque Adventist Clinic, established in 1980.16 In addition, there was a significant expansion in the Adventist communication channels - the radio program Esperança Adventista was created, through which church events and programs were announced, as well as spiritual messages.17

In September 1982, the Conference was divided into East São Paulo and South São Paulo Conferences. Osmundo remained in the leadership of the new East São Paulo Conference until 1984,18 when he accepted a call to pastor the Vila das Belezas district, in the city of São Paulo.19 In 1985, he was pastor of the Porto Alegre Central Church, capital of Rio Grande do Sul;20 and in 1986 he was president of Central Brazil Conference, headquartered in Goiânia, capital of the state of Goiás.21 From 1987 to 1995, he worked in the South American Division as director of the Stewardship and Family Ministries.22

In September 1995, he accepted a call to serve as chaplain of the Silvestre Adventist Hospital, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, where he worked until 2003.23 By God’s grace, as a result of his ministry, many patients decided to be baptized.24 Osmundo Graciliano retired in 2004, after 42 years of service to the SDA.25 However, he continued active as an elder at the UNASP-EC Church.26 He died on October 17, 2013, at the age of 75, in the city of Engenheiro Coelho, state of São Paulo.27

As a pastor, evangelist, and administrator, Osmundo Graciliano dos Santos Júnior left a legacy of 42 years of ministry to the Adventist Church. He was known for being a counselor and humble leader, who wished only for the spiritual growth of his team. He used to tell many impressive stories of God’s providence in his life, especially about the indigenous people in Peru. For his Christian influence and friendship, he is remembered by many who lived around him as “my chaplain.”
